Chinese EV Giant BYD Launches First Pickup Truck Shark BYD unveiled its latest offering, the BYD Shark pickup truck, in Mexico on May 15th. Geared toward the lucrative US and Australian markets, the potential for a debut in China remains unconfirmed. With a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour, the BYD Shark is available in two distinct variants: GL and GS. While specific differentiations between the models have yet to be disclosed, BYD has ensured distinct pricing for each variant. The BYD Shark features a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a dual-motor setup. The front motor delivers a maximum power of 170 kW and 310 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 150 kW of power and 340 Nm of torque. This configuration enables the Shark to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 5.7 seconds, with a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery pack, the Shark offers a pure electric NEDC range of 100 km and a combined petrol-electric NEDC range of up to 840 kilometers. BYD also claims a fuel consumption rating of 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

The interior of the BYD Shark boasts a driver-centric design, highlighted by a 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel, a spacious 12.8-inch central touchscreen for infotainment, and a sleek 12-inch heads-up display (HUD). It seamlessly integrates with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for enhanced smartphone connectivity. In terms of dimensions, the pickup truck measures 5457 mm in length, 1971 mm in width, 1925 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3260 mm.

To enhance security and visibility, this pickup truck comes equipped with a 360° panoramic view camera system and a 180° chassis camera. Together, they offer an extended 540° ultra-wide transparent panoramic image, effectively minimizing blind spots. The BYD Shark represents the automaker’s venture into the mid-size pickup truck segment, initially focusing on markets beyond China.

The BYD Shark GL version is priced at 899,980 Mexican Pesos (about Rs. 48,42,823), while the BYD Shark GS version costs 969,800 Mexican Pesos (approximately Rs. 52,18,559). The Shark comes in three colors: Pallas White, Marmara Black, and Atlantis Grey.
